Hope is smart little coyote who’s seasoned in avoiding conflict with her neighbors. With a notched ear, she’s easy to identify. Hope is quiet, never aggressive and we see her alone most of the time. My husband and I have been tracking her sightings and documenting her behavior off and on since 2019, always using our car as a blind and a long lens so we don’t influence her behavior. We’ll continue to document Hope for as long as we can and educate neighbors on ways to coexist with her and other coyotes. Many are open to coexistence and some people even fall in love with her. In fact, that’s how Hope got her name. To most people she goes unnoticed and just blends into the neighborhood. She’s been treated for sarcoptic mange multiple times. With each treatment, she improves, but then eventually relapses. It’s possible that her immune system has been compromised. Coyotes who suffer from mange are typically anemic, dehydrated, hungry, and like all coyotes, just trying to survive in a world with so much human influence.
